Top Rated Telescopes
Today we decided to work on a telescope buying guide for those of you that have been wondering which telescope to buy. We picked writing about our top rated telescopes because let’s face it, we all have our heads in the stars from time to time.
Looking back at the history of telescopes we have to go all the way back to 1608 when a guy from the Netherlands named Hans Lippershey tried to patent one. Shortly afterward, Galileo worked prove the invention and is who we always thought invented the telescope and would be on top rated inventors list (if we had one, hmmm).
There are a number of different types of telescopes but we are going to focus on optical telescopes because these are the best telescopes beginners. Not that we just include beginner telescopes in our top rated telescopes review, we just mean than we know you are not going to be buying a radio telescope or an x-ray telescope today.

The two basic types of telescopes we looked at as a best beginners telescope are refractor and reflector telescopes. In a refractor telescope, the lens is the primary viewing piece. The light passes through the lens and is refracted as it passes through the lens. Refractor telescopes let the light pass straight through the telescope to your eye.
Reflector telescopes pass the light through the lens to a mirror and you view the mirror images. A reflecting telescope is considered the professional choice and is most widely used by astronomers.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of refractor and reflection telescopes?
- Refractor telescopes are more rugged. Normally they are in a sealed tube and rarely need cleaning. In a reflector you will have to clean more because the internal components are exposed to the air and dust.
- Refractors are typically better for land use.
- Refractors are generally heavier and longer than reflector telescopes.
- Refractor telescopes are just point and look. A reflector telescope requires more adjustments to view your target object.
- Refractor telescopes suffer from an effect called chromatic aberration or color deviation or distortion.
- There are more image faults in refractor telescopes.
- Reflectors can be much bigger which increases the magnification.
- Reflecting telescopes are more expensive and have more sensitive internal parts.
- Reflecting telescopes have larger apertures (more on that below) which means better viewing of objects.
- Although refractors are usually cheaper as a whole, when you compare price as a cost per square inch of aperture then reflectors are usually cheaper.
If you want to buy a cheap telescope you will probably end up with a refractor telescope, if money is not your primary concern then go with a reflector telescope – unless you need a rugged telescope with virtually no internal parts, then you are back to a refractor telescope.
So how do you pick the best telescope, hopefully from our top rated home telescopes list?
- Think about what you want the telescope for. If you are going to be moving it around a lot or use for land viewing then a refractor telescope might be the way to go. If you are going to use it as more or less stationary and be viewing the sky then a reflector is probably the way to go. Obviously it is up to you, remember the reflector has the better image but the refractor is more rugged and easier to use.
- For an astronomical telescope aperture is important. Apertures means the diameter of the telescope’s main optical piece (lens or mirror). A larger aperture means more light which means the more you can see and the clearer it will be.
- Magnification is important for obvious reasons, but aperture is more important. High magnification does not matter if the object is too blurry to see in the first place.
- Either reflector or refraction. We have discussed this above so we will not go into it again. There are advantages and disadvantages to both, but remember serious astronomers.
Who makes best telescopes? That is debatable and we did consider the best brand telescopes during this review. Yes, some of the big brands are great and you can argue they make the best telescopes. However, we looked at more than that. We considered price, quality and brand name. Sometimes you can find a high quality telescope that is not one of the major brand name telescopes. Like most things we tend to look at brand as an assurance of quality, which normally works but we might miss out on some quality products that way.

I absolutely love telescopes, my wife never wanted me to get one because she says I won’t use it and it will just get in the way collecting dust. After reading through your ratings, I think I am going to bite the bullet and get one anyway.
I will probably have to dust it myself, but I think it will be worth it. I love looking at the moon and I think with a good telescope it will be even more fun.
Maybe I will even discover something. That is part of the fun in looking at the sky anyway. The unknown.
I love telescopes as well. If you get the right one they can be a lot of fun. Be sure to get the one that meets your needs, as we said there are a number of different options out there to choose from.
