When we started this ratings article we considered a number of different focus groups. We looked at the best water flosser for braces and the best water flosser for kids. It seemed like both of those where groups that can really benefit for a top rated water flosser. However, after reviewing a number of water flossers we found that what we really wanted was the best water flosser period. If it was the best rated water flosser then most of the time by default it would be the best water flosser for braces or the best water flosser for kids.

The second thing we ran into was that when people think of the best water flosser they typically think of them in terms of brand name. As a result people tended to ask what is the best Waterpik flosser or the best Oral B flosser. Yes, they make great water flossers but we have always felt that it is a mistake to overrate a product simply because of the brand name. Just to make sure we are on the same page we want to make sure you know what a water flosser is. A water flosser is a dental hygiene device used to clean primarily between the teeth using a jet of water. Most of us probably think of a Waterpik flosser when thinking of a water flosser. In fact, that is want many people still call all the devices in the water flosser category. Kind of like some people refer to all sodas as a Coke or maybe an even better example is a Q-tip. Q-tip is not the name of the ear cleaning device, it is a brand name. Waterpik kind of took over the water flosser name like that.

Another question is if using a top rated water flosser is as good as using string floss. According to the Waterpik website. A water flosser is 51% more effective as compared to string floss at reducing gingivitis. A water flosser is over twice as effective at reducing gingival bleeding and 29% more effective at removing plaque as compared to regular string dental floss.

If you are going to use a best rated water flosser it is recommend that you first brush your teeth, then use the water flosser and finally use mouthwash. That does not mean you cannot do it anyway you choose. Regardless of the order using a water flosser in addition to brushing will improve your overall dental hygiene.

A standard water flosser has a number of parts. One important part is the water reservoir and it is important to keep it clean. Of course, it is important to keep all the parts of your water flosser clean but the water reservoir and cleaning tip are probably the most important. There are a couple of different types of water flossers. I am not going to discuss the shower water flosser or the faucet water flosser. To me those are a different type of product as far as how they work. They do the same purpose, just work differently from a mechanical standpoint.

The countertop water flosser is the one most of us are probably familiar with. It is the one like the original Waterpik water flosser and has been improved on and changed in design over the year. The other is a cordless water flosser. Just like the name suggests, it I cordless and is on self-contained handheld unit.

Overall, I prefer the standard countertop water flosser and we focused most on that variety in when rating the water flossers we looked at. If you prefer the handheld water flosser, they are out there but overall I did not like the total performance of the ones we looked at. Of course, there are always exceptions.
