Everyone loves a good travel backpack, that is why we wanted to look for the best backpacks for traveling for you today. To be the best backpack for travel it also needs to be the best lightweight backpack for travel. We know that you do not want to carry extra weight. Plus, the more lightweight the backpack is the more stuff you can carry, right?

When we originally started this backpack buying guide we were going to do a broad search on all types of backpacks. Many of the best backpacks we found could be used for multiple purposes but we did find a couple of differences.

When you are looking for the best backpack for hiking for instance you might want more of a frame backpack that can carry some larger items that you might not typically need when you are looking at backpacks for traveling abroad. Another thing we notices is if you are looking for backpacks for students you might not need as large of a backpack and you might want it to be more stylish as opposed to a functional backpack for travel. That is not to say that our suggestions below will not work for hiking or students, just that we did not specifically look for backpacks that met the need (or desire) of hikers or students. We just wanted the best backpack for a travel and the features we though a traveler might desire.

Why do you want a backpack for traveling?

1. Checked luggage. When you check your luggage you really never know if it is going to come out the other side. We have all faced this at one time or another, or at least worried about it.
2. Carry stuff. Sounds crazy right. Women have a purse they can put somethings in but there is not always a lot of room. Men have almost no option for carrying things around when traveling. A good lightweight travel backpack gives you the ability to comfortably carry anything you might need with you.
3. Keep your important items with you. What is important depends on you. Could be a passport, identification, phone, medical items, computer, tablet or anything else that you fell you will need to keep in your possession.
4. Let’s you pack extra stuff that might not fit in your luggage.

So, how to choose the right travel backpack became the question we considered while looking through all the options.

1. It should be a strong lightweight material that is water resistant. It needs to be relatively easy to clean, preferably with water alone.
2. This is a personal choice, we tried to include different options in our backpacks for travelers buying guide but really it depends on if you want your backpack to be a suitcase or a backpack. We respect your choice.
3. Lockable zippers. Having the ability to secure a travel backpack is a plus. Maybe not a make or break feature but certainly a big plus. It is also great to be able to protect your valuables, it is hard to watch them 100% of the time. Especially if it is a large backpack and you are wearing it in a crowd.
4. Lots and lots of pockets/compartments. At least one large one and then as many smaller ones that we can get. They should not be too small; an impractical size pocket is a waste of space. Having more than one large compartment is also a plus in a travel backpack.
5. Magnetic flaps. These can be a plus if you have compartments that you need to get into and out of quickly. We see these as a personal choice in a travel backpack because of security issues. If a pocket is easy to get into or out of, then it is easy for everyone to get into and out of. Magnetic flaps might be OK for a hiking backpack or even a student backpack but you should really consider if you want them in a travel backpack. They are convenient so we did consider them, but we would not recommend putting anything valuable or irreplaceable in them.
6. Small pockets for Pens and Pencils. You might think this is just a plus for a backpack for students but you would be wrong. You would be surprised how valuable a small pen and pencil pocket will be to you.
7. Waterproof media pouch. You have to put your phone somewhere safe, having a convenient waterproof media pouch is a huge plus. Even better if it has a way to run a head phone wire out of. Although that is less of a necessity with wireless headphones these days. Something to consider but not a major feature (the slit not the pouch, the pouch is a huge plus).
8. Padded shoulder straps. If you are carrying a heavy load it is beneficial to have padded shoulder straps to make long hauls more comfortable. The more you are planning to stuff into your travel backpack the more important you will find padded shoulder straps.
9. Padded back. Having padding on the back of the travel backpack that goes against your back will also help in making your trip more comfortable. It also helps offset bad packing on your part, so there will not be anything sticking in your back.
10. Water bottle pouch. We associate this more with a hiking backpack but having access to something to drink can also be a huge plus in a lightweight backpack for travel.
