Over the counter weight loss pills typically function in a couple of ways. Each of the reviewed over the counter weight loss pills we reviewed did one or more of the following.

Reduced appetite. Basically, this is designed to make you feel more full and therefore eat less. Thus, reducing your calories.

Reduced absorption of nutrients like fat. This means that your body will absorb well calories.

Increases fat burning. Like it sounds, these weight loss pills make you burn more calories.

We determined there are a couple of different types of weight loss pills you can get over the counter. They can rely on a number of different methods or ingredients Some of the more popular additives are:

Garcinia Cambogia. It is believed that Garcinia can inhibit a fat-producing enzyme in the body and possibly increases the level of serotonin which is supposed to reduce cravings. No real side effects reported.

Caffeine. Caffeine is a well know metabolism booster and proven to burn more calories. It is a very common additive to commercial over the weight loss pills. It does have some side effects and you have to be careful not to take in a lot of excess caffeine in addition to the weight loss pill.

Orlistat (Alli). Orlistat is a weight loss supplement that works by inhibiting the breakdown of fat in the gut. Of course, it can have side effects as well including but not limited to loose stools.

Raspberry Keytones. This is a substance found in raspberries and is responsible for their smell Lately there have been a lot of popular weight loss programs which have been touting the benefits of raspberry keytones. They are supposed to increase the breakdown of fat and increase a hormone called adiponectin. The major side effect is that your burps may smell like raspberries. Interesting, I would recommend them just for the fun burps.

Green Coffee Bean Extract. This relies on caffeine and chlorogenic acid which is supposed to reduce the breakdown of carbohydrates in your stomach. It may also help reduce blood sugar. Has the same overall side effects as caffeine and the acid may cause diarrhea. Also some people may be allergic to green coffee beans.

Glucomannan. This is a fiber that absorbs water in the stomach helping you to feel more full. This is the same for all fiber additives so we are not going to give them a separate paragraph. Fiber may also help reduce blood sugar, cholesterol and triglycerides. It may cause bloating and flatulence.

Meratrim. Meratrim is claimed to make it harder for fat cells to multiply which should reduce the amount of fat pick up in the blood stream. This should help your body burn stored fat. Right now there does not appear to be any side effects in this weight loss supplement.

Green Tea Extract. Supposed to increase the amount of norepinephrine which helps you burn fat. It has some caffeine which may affect those sensitive to caffeine. Overall, green tea extract seems to be a pretty good overall substance.

Conjugated Linoleic Acid. This is a healthy trans fat. It should reduce the appetite and boost the metabolism. It may have some long term negative effects to the liver and increase your insulin resistance.

Forskolin. It is claimed to raise the your levels of cAMP inside your cells and increase fat burning.

Bitter Orange. Works similar to ephedrine but less potent. It can reduce your appetite and increase fat burning. It could have serious side effects like ephedrine to the heart and may be addictive.

We know the appeal of losing weight fast is hard to resist. But, do not set unrealistic expectations when it comes to weight loss. If you are 5’6” and weigh 170 pounds it is not realistic or healthy to expect to lose 20 pounds a week. If you are 5’6” and weigh 220 pounds then you may be able to lose 5 to 10 pounds per week initially provided you not only use a top rated weight loss pill but also change your lifestyle and eating habits.

Do your research and track your results. Different weight loss pills may work different for different people because of the ingredients.
